Welding Inspection

When building a structure, whether it is industrial, commercial, a home or an office building – basically anytime there is any type of welding involved – welding inspection is of the utmost importance.

Welding is a process that connects materials (usually metal or thermoplastics) together. The process involves melting the materials being connected at the point at which the connection will be made. Then a filler material is added between the two work pieces. This molten mix of the three materials coalesces as it cools to form a very strong joint.

There are many different methods for welding materials together. Up until the close of the 19th century, forge was the only form available. This is the technique blacksmiths utilized, by heating metal and pounding it together. Right before the 20th century started, arc and oxyfuel were developed, and then resistance soon followed. Then after World War I and World War II many of the modern methods of welding were invented, including shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, submerged arc and flux-cored arc. Later on, some of the more recent innovations were invented, such as laser beam and electron beam. With all the available techniques to aid in the construction of a building, and the widely-varying levels of skill required to properly execute such techniques, weld inspection in the present day continues to have an ever-increasing importance.

Imagine a sky high multi-level structure in the process of being constructed. Think of each of the several-ton steel girders that must be connected to form the frame of the structure. Each of these extremely heavy steel girders must be connected to the other in the strongest, safest way possible. They are required to resist wind loads and earthquake forces of seismic activity. So it is clear that welding becomes very important at this point. And not just any will do, but high-quality and accurate.

Unlimited Inspections & Construction Fabrication carries out inspections for any construction project. Building codes require that all inspections must take place for all connections that are designed to resist loads and forces. When a structure’s overall strength is only as strong as the strength of the materials’ connections to one another, this seems like one of the most fundamentally significant aspects in the entire spectrum of construction inspections.
